How to prepare for a 50-mile walk in San Diego?

Fitness & Sports 2 answers • Ulrike Wagner
I'm planning to attempt a 50-mile walk from Rancho Bernardo to San Ysidro and I want to know how to adequately prepare for it. I've already learned my lesson the hard way by not considering the closure of Kearny Villa Rd and taking a detour on Genesee, which ended up being a 33-mile walk. I'm looking for advice from people who have completed long walks/jogs in San Diego.

To improve your walking endurance, start by incorporating daily walks of about two hours, along with a longer walk every weekend. Gradually increase the distance of your weekend walk while maintaining a consistent daily routine of five miles. It's also essential to have one rest day on Sundays. After six months of consistent training, you'll likely see significant improvements in your endurance. If you're looking for a challenging experience, consider participating in the San Diego 100-mile endurance race, which attracts a supportive community of participants.

In addition to the previously suggested tips, I found it helpful to wear compression sleeves on my calves during my 50-mile walk. I also made sure to stay hydrated by consuming sufficient electrolytes. To alleviate muscle soreness, I regularly massaged my legs, stretched, and used a rolling ball under my feet every 15 miles. This routine helped minimize my soreness to a few days of mild discomfort. It's also crucial to invest in proper footwear and socks to prevent blisters.
