Best beaches for families with young kids in San Diego?

I'm planning a first long stay in San Diego with two kids (6 & 8) and I'm concerned about sneaker waves coming up out of nowhere while we're on the beach, making sand castles, looking in tide pools, etc. Do I need to worry about rip currents when the tide is coming in or going out?

When the rip current risk is high, I limit my kids' ocean activities to areas near lifeguard towers, where they can be closely supervised. I stay knee-deep in the water, ready to flag down the lifeguard if needed, to ensure their safety.

What about simply walking along the beach, building sandcastles, and enjoying other beach activities when the rip current risk is high? Should these activities be avoided, or can they be done safely?

If your child is being swept by waves, it's likely they're not in a rip current. Rip currents are characterized by calm water between wave areas, which can be deceiving. Always keep a close eye on your child when they're in the water.

As a parent of a six-year-old, I believe kids need close adult supervision when in the water. It's essential to stay within arm's reach at all times to ensure their safety.

Before entering the water, look for a lifeguard tower and strike up a conversation with the lifeguard. They're highly trained professionals who can provide valuable insights on safe swimming areas and potential hazards. They're every-day heroes who know the ins and outs of the local beaches.

La Jolla Shores is a kid-friendly beach option, but don't underestimate the power of the ocean. Always keep a close eye on your children when they're in or near the water.
