I just moved to San Diego and I'm still getting used to the local wildlife. I've got a gecko living in my bathroom and I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing.

I think it's a type of house gecko that's native to this area, but my mom gets them in her house in southern Louisiana too. I'm wondering if it's because of the high humidity levels now.

They do thrive in San Diego. The gecko's adaptability to our climate is likely a key factor in its presence here.

House geckos are harmless and will eat your bugs for you. They're great to have around, actually. My brother has them in his house and they never bother him.

I was worried that the gecko would starve since it's living inside, but it sounds like it'll be fine. Thanks for the info!

Be warned, geckos can be messy. I've got one living in my garage and it leaves a trail of poop everywhere. It also has babies in there every year, which is a real pain.

I highly recommend using a citizen science platform like iNaturalist to identify creatures you find. It's a great resource and can help you figure out what kind of gecko you've got by providing access to a large database of species, including photos and information on their habitats.
