Halifax's Rental Housing Crisis: Big Companies Are the New Landlords
Living in Halifax for just a few months, I've quickly realized that finding a decent rental is a challenge. But a recent report by New Dal Legal Aid has shed light on a bigger issue: the majority of the city's rental housing is now in the hands of large companies, rather than individual landlords. This isn't just a problem for current residents; it's a significant shift that could make the city less accessible for expats and digital nomads like me.
The report, based on a sample of rental properties, found that these big companies are controlling the majority of the city's rental housing. For expats like myself, this means higher rent prices and less flexibility in lease terms. Many of these companies prioritize profit over tenant satisfaction, which can lead to issues like shorter lease durations and increased security deposits.
One of the alternatives I’ve come across is Local Rental Hub, a platform that connects tenants directly with local landlords. Another option is to check out Halifax Housing, a local nonprofit that helps individuals find affordable housing and offers support services. Both of these can offer a more personalized and community-oriented experience compared to dealing with large corporations.
