I work remotely and need reliable internet for video calls. Currently looking at Telmex, TotalPlay, and Starlink. What do other remote workers use?

Ay, internet — the eternal topic for us remote workers here jaja. Let me share what I've learned after 3 years of Zoom calls from Playa.

So Telmex Infinitum is what most people have. They offer 20 Mbps for $399/mo, 60 Mbps for $499/mo, and 100 Mbps for $599/mo. It's reliable in the established neighborhoods like Centro and Gonzalo Guerrero, but can be spotty in the newer developments. Installation takes 1-3 weeks — and here's the thing, go to the Telmex office on 30th Ave in person. Calling their phone line is a nightmare, you'll be on hold forever and nothing gets resolved. In person? 20 minutes and done.

TotalPlay is the better option if it's available in your building. It's fiber optic, faster and more stable — 100 Mbps for about $549/mo. The problem is coverage. Not every area has it yet. Check first before you fall in love with a particular apartment.

Starlink has become popular too. $500 USD for the equipment plus $50/month. Some people in my building actually share one and split the cost, which is clever.

But here's what I actually do, and it's worked perfectly: Telmex 60 Mbps as my main connection, plus a Telcel hotspot with the 20 GB plan ($349/mo) as backup for when Telmex decides to take a siesta. Total cost is about $850 MXN per month — less than $50 USD — and I haven't missed a client call in three years.

And on days when everything conspires against you, Nest and Bunker coworking spaces have rock-solid internet. A day pass is $200-300 MXN. I keep that as my emergency plan and maybe use it once every couple months.
