Xplor Park: Your Complete Adventure Guide
Xplor Park near Playa del Carmen ($140-160) offers Mexico's best zip lines soaring over jungle and splashing into underground rivers, amphibious vehicle driving through caves, underground river swimming in illuminated cenotes, and cave rafting, all activities unlimited and repeatable. Located 6km south of Playa del Carmen, the all-inclusive park includes breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks. Arrive at 9am and start with cave activities first (shorter lines), then do zip lines after 2pm when crowds thin. Book online 2-3 days ahead for 10-15% discounts. Allow a full day (9am-6pm) to experience all four main activities multiple times.
Main Activities
The park offers four primary attractions that you can enjoy throughout your visit:
Zip Lines: Two different routes with multiple towers give you extensive flying time over the jungle canopy. These are widely considered the best zip lines in the entire Riviera Maya, and having tried various options around Mexico, I completely agree. The engineering is impressive, you'll soar over treetops, splash into underground rivers, and experience views that photos simply can't capture.
Off-Road Driving: Navigate amphibious vehicles through wooded trails with tunnels. It's an exciting way to explore the jungle terrain, and you don't need any prior experience. The vehicles handle the rough terrain easily while you focus on enjoying the scenery and occasional splash through water features.
Underground Cave Swimming: Float through illuminated circular paths in crystal-clear cenote waters. The lighting creates a magical atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. For someone who came from a landlocked city, swimming through ancient cave systems still amazes me every single visit.
Cave Paddling: Raft through underground waterways, exploring the extensive cave system at your own pace. The stalactites and rock formations are stunning, and the cool cave temperatures provide welcome relief from the tropical heat.
Visitors can repeat activities based on availability, so if lines are short, you can enjoy your favorites multiple times. I've done the main zip line circuit three times in a single visit when the park wasn't crowded.
Timing Your Visit
Arrive at 9am when the park opens to maximize your day. Here's an insider tip I wish someone had told me on my first visit: skip the zip lines initially. Lines are longest in the morning as everyone rushes there first. Start with cave swimming or rafting instead, then hit the zip lines in the afternoon when waits are significantly shorter.
Weekdays generally see smaller crowds than weekends. If you have flexibility, Tuesday through Thursday tend to be the quietest days. Avoid visiting on days when cruise ships are docked in Cozumel or Playa del Carmen, as those passengers often book excursions to Xplor.
What to Wear and Bring
Aqua socks or ankle-strap sandals work best for footwear. The park requires proper footwear for driving activities, though paths are generally smooth. Regular flip-flops risk falling off during zip lines, trust me, you don't want to be barefoot for the rest of your day.
Bring waterproof cameras or a GoPro if you want to capture your own footage, biodegradable sunscreen (required by the park to protect the cenote ecosystems), and a personal towel since none are provided. Lockers are complimentary and secure, so leave valuables there rather than trying to carry them.
Wear swimwear with shorts over top, the zip line harness sits on your upper thighs, and having a layer between the harness and bare skin prevents chafing during multiple runs.
Getting There
The entrance sits directly off Highway 307, clearly marked and easy to find. If you're on a budget like I was when I first arrived, colectivos (shared vans) offer affordable access, just ask the driver to stop at Xplor and walk across the highway to reach the parking lot. The fare is around 30-40 pesos from Playa del Carmen.
Taxis and rental cars work fine too, with free parking available at the park. Uber operates in Playa del Carmen and can drop you at the entrance, though getting a return ride can be trickier, consider scheduling your pickup in advance.
Food and Drinks
A buffet operates from 11am to 5pm with Mexican and international options included in your admission. The food quality is genuinely good, not the typical theme park fare you might expect. Fresh guacamole, grilled meats, salads, and various Mexican dishes keep you fueled for adventure.
A smoothie bar also serves beverages throughout the day, which is essential when you're exerting yourself in tropical heat. Everything except alcohol is covered by your ticket price, so eat and drink as much as you need.
Booking Tips
Book tickets online in advance for the best pricing, you can save up to 15% by purchasing 21 or more days ahead. This also lets you skip ticket counter lines and head straight to the activities. Tickets are valid for one year and can be rescheduled up to 24 hours before your visit, providing excellent flexibility for unpredictable travel plans or weather concerns.
