Why are NYC green markets so expensive??

Services 5 answers • danielle_gonzdanielle_gonz
I'm from a rural state and used to working at a farmers market. I thought NYC green markets would be similar, but the prices don't make sense to me. I was expecting cheaper produce because there's no middleman. Is it just a culture difference or do farm stands have to pay a huge fee to have rights to the space? Help me understand, please...

Many farmers in the area have to travel a considerable distance to reach the city, and then make the return journey.

While farmers selling directly to consumers at markets may avoid middlemen, they still incur significant expenses for transportation, staffing, and vending. Additionally, land prices and operating costs are higher in the New York City area compared to other parts of the country, leading to increased costs for farmers.

At many city markets, farmers focus on selling specialty or heirloom produce, which is often more profitable due to the high costs of distribution in the city. This approach allows farmers to command higher prices for their products, making the effort worthwhile.

Farmers at green markets in New York City typically come from nearby regions, such as eastern Long Island, central New Jersey, and upstate New York. They face expenses like fuel, tolls, insurance, permits, and rental fees for their stall space.

I understand that these farmers are not based in New York City - and I never suggested a comparison to a rural roadside stand, which would be an unusual scenario. The costs of insurance, licenses, transportation, and rental space still apply to these out-of-state markets.
