Montreal’s Iconic Pink House: What You Need to Know
It's a familiar sight in Montreal, perched atop the abandoned Canada Malting plant: the tiny pink house, a quirky landmark in the Saint-Henri neighborhood. But now, after years of neglect, the building under the pink house is in 'imminent danger,' and emergency measures are being put in place to secure the site.

The Building's Deterioration
On October 1, 2026, the developer, Développement La Malterie S.E.C., announced that the site is officially a safety hazard. The Sud-Ouest borough's engineering report concluded that the building is deteriorating at a worrying rate, posing an 'imminent danger.' As a result, a section of Rue Saint-Ambroise has been closed to traffic, and the building's front section will be demolished.
The pink house itself, however, will be preserved as part of the future project called La Malterie, which aims to include 685 housing units, 20% of them social housing, and community spaces. The project is still in the preliminary stages, with the borough still reviewing the plans.
This Affects Everyone in the Area
As a remote worker based in Montreal since 2017, I can tell you that this news affects everyone in the area. The closure of Rue Saint-Ambroise means you'll need to plan detours, especially if you live or work in the neighborhood. The pink house, which has become a symbol of the city's creativity and resilience, will no longer be visible from the street, but its legacy will continue through the new development.
