Cancún, Mexico: Ameba Comecerebros Poses in Yucatán
Earlier this month, a tragic incident brought the potential dangers of a rare but deadly microorganism to the forefront in Yucatán, Mexico, with a fatal case of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis. An instructor of water sports passed away after contracting the Naegleria fowleri amoeba from a lagoon in Plaza La Isla, north of Mérida. The incident has raised serious concerns among locals and visitors alike, particularly those who enjoy water-based activities in the region.

The case highlights the need for heightened awareness and better water management practices to prevent similar tragedies. Authorities have taken steps to temporarily close the affected lagoon and conduct extensive surveillance on those who may have been exposed. As of September 18, 180 individuals remain under close monitoring, with follow-ups scheduled through October 4.
While the risk is localized, this event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining proper safety protocols in public water facilities. For those planning to engage in water sports or recreational activities, it's crucial to stay informed and follow local guidelines to avoid any potential hazards.
Five years ago, I drove my entire life from Mexico City to Cancun in a packed Nissan. The plan was to stay six months. The Caribbean had other plans. Now I run an e-commerce business from a hammock (sometimes literally) and spend too much time arguing about which taqueria is the best.
