An instructor of water sports passed away after contracting the Naegleria fowleri amoeba from a lagoon in Plaza La Isla, north of Mérida. The incident has raised serious concerns among locals and visitors alike, particularly those who enjoy water-based activities in the region.

The case highlights the need for heightened awareness and better water management practices to prevent similar tragedies. Authorities have taken steps to temporarily close the affected lagoon and conduct extensive surveillance on those who may have been exposed. As of September 18, 180 individuals remain under close monitoring, with follow-ups scheduled through October 4.
