Severe Storms Looming Over Santurce and Surrounding Areas
The skies over Santurce and neighboring towns are expected to be anything but calm this weekend, as the Servicio Nacional de Meteorología (SNM) has issued a special weather statement for Saturday, September 26, 2026. According to meteorologist Gabriel Lojero, the area should brace for strong thunderstorms, with the potential for heavy rainfall, gusty winds of over 50 miles per hour, and even hail.

The storms, which are currently affecting areas such as Corozal, Naranjito, Vega Alta, Morovis, Orocovis, Ciales, Toa Alta, Toa Baja, Vega Baja, Florida, Barranquitas, and Comerio, pose significant risks. Meteorology warns that lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from the storm, urging residents to seek shelter indoors or in a vehicle if possible.
These thunderstorms will also bring torrential rains that could lead to sudden flooding. If you must drive, stay clear of flooded roads. The SNM advises that these conditions could also impact water quality and waste management systems, potentially affecting the local environment and residents' health.
As someone who grew up in Santurce and now works in design, I urge everyone to pay close attention to the weather updates. This is not just a weather event; it's a reminder of the environmental challenges we face. Stay informed, and take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety and that of your loved ones.
