Isla Mujeres Power Grid Upgrade Begins After Recent Accidents
The single most useful takeaway: The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has started replacing old power poles on Isla Mujeres after a series of accidents that highlighted the need for urgent repairs.
The island's mayor, Atenea Gómez Ricalde, inspected the ongoing work on August 24, 2026, and emphasized that the upgrades are part of CFE's efforts to improve the island's electrical grid. The project aims to replace deteriorated utility poles and transformers to enhance safety and reliability.
The work will continue over the next three weeks and is being conducted in coordination with the municipal government. Gómez Ricalde has asked residents for their understanding and patience during this process.
On August 17, 2026, two accidents involving live wires resulted in severe burns to a motorcyclist and the burning of three vehicles. These incidents underscore the urgency of the repairs. The CFE plans to address these issues by replacing old poles and hardware, with work currently underway in the Ampliación La Gloria neighborhood.
Residents can expect some disruption as the CFE proceeds with the maintenance program. However, the municipal government is committed to facilitating the work and ensuring that the project is completed as smoothly as possible.
