Calgary Schools Struggle with Capacity Crunch as CBE Seeks More Modular Classrooms
While I've grown to appreciate the quiet streets and healthcare system in Calgary, the recent news of the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) requesting 26 new modular classrooms has brought to light a significant challenge facing the city's education system.

The CBE has flagged several schools as being in overflow, with 10 of them projected to exceed a 90% utilization rate over the next three years. This situation has led to a growing concern about how to manage the increasing demand for school spaces, especially as the city continues to sprawl.
At a recent Board of Trustees meeting, trustee Susan Vukadinovic questioned the prioritization of modular classrooms as a short-term solution. She raised valid points about why these units are being installed in overflow schools rather than in feeder schools. The superintendent, Dany Breton, explained that site constraints prevent the installation of modular units in some overflow schools.
With only a slight dip in enrolment over the past two years, the CBE is hoping to get nearly half of its requested 64 modular classrooms from the provincial government. The board sees these temporary solutions as crucial while it awaits the construction of new schools, which can take several years.
The city's population surge, driven by new housing developments, has put significant pressure on existing schools. As more families move in, the demand for schools increases, and the CBE is reviewing its criteria for planning future schools to ensure they can accommodate the growing population.
