Portable Basketball Hoop for Backyard?

Portable Basketball Hoop for Backyard?

I'm looking for a way to set up a basketball hoop in my backyard for my 5-year-old son. We have no driveway and I don't want him playing in the alley due to speeding cars. Anyone have a creative solution?

Kids play basketball in alleys all over the city, including my neighborhood, without any issues. If you're concerned about the hoops, you can contact your local park district for assistance. I've always wondered why some parks have hoops without baskets.

Cars drive recklessly in our alley, and we're close to a turn. My child is only 5 and has trouble listening, so I'm not sure they'd be able to follow rules. I'd rather have loud kids than kids exposed to drug activity. The park district may have removed the hoops due to excessive noise.

Have you considered other nearby parks or indoor spaces? Each park has a designated manager who can help with replacing hoops. You may also want to reach out to your local alderperson for assistance. A smaller hoop might be suitable for a 5-year-old, and they can still practice shooting and passing.

Consider getting your neighbors to sign a petition for speed bumps in the alley. When our alley was resurfaced a few years ago, the speed bumps were removed, and I was surprised by how fast people drove. Once the speed bumps were reinstalled, the speed issue was resolved. You'll need to check with your local government to determine the requirements for installing speed bumps.

If you have enough space in your backyard, you could install pavers or concrete and a basketball hoop. Some neighbors have also converted their rooftops into basketball courts with full netting. However, many people in the city play basketball in alleys without issues.
