Laguna Market’s Warm-Up Soup Recipe for Autumn and New School Year
As autumn settles in and the new school year commences, the Laguna Market is offering up a comforting recipe to warm you up: Sopa Boba. This traditional soup, also known as bodrio or pilgrim soup, has roots in medieval times, serving as a charity dish for the poor and a nourishing meal for those in need. For expats and digital nomads in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this recipe is not just a taste of home, but a reminder of the community and generosity that can be found in Tenerife.

The origins of “Sopa Boba” trace back to the mix of leftover dishes served to the poor by convents as an act of charity. This name also referred to the scraps uneaten by patrons in taverns, which were given to musicians or poets in exchange for entertainment, such as playing music or reciting verses. In a broader sense, “sopa boba” describes a bland dish made from water and scraps, lacking nutrients, provided to certain groups in times of scarcity. This could include prisoners, students in boarding schools, soldiers, sailors, or refugees held in camps.
