I love winter in Halifax, but I'm worried about an El Nino bringing less snow and warmer temperatures. I've heard conflicting answers, and I just want to know what to expect this holiday season.

I expect a wet and stormy winter, to be honest. It's probably going to be a messy few months.

Nova Scotia's snowfall is quite different from what Ontarians are used to. Although last year saw a decent amount of snow, it didn't stick around for long. Interestingly, Ontario is also experiencing less snow than usual.

I have fond memories of watching snow fall at night, hearing the sound of plows, and sledding down hills. While it did rain more here than in central Canada, the region was significantly snowier 20 years ago than it is today. In fact, the average annual snowfall in the area has decreased by about 10 centimeters over the past two decades.

Looking back, we did experience significant snowfall in the past. The 2004 White Juan event was particularly challenging, and the 2015 winter was also marked by severe weather conditions, especially on Wednesdays. It's only been in the last seven years that we've seen a significant decline in snowfall.

The last time a super El Nino hit Canada hard was during the 1998 Montreal ice storm. If a similar event were to occur, our winters would likely be characterized by increased moisture and frequent nor'easters, possibly resulting in freezing rain. One can only hope that it won't be a once-in-a-thousand-years storm.

I'm really hoping we don't experience an icy winter this year. To be honest, I think that would be worse than the snow we got last year.

The severe weather events that occurred on Wednesdays in March 2015 took place during an El Nino year, which may have contributed to the extreme conditions.

According to meteorologists, El Niño typically has a limited impact on the weather in our region. However, this year's super El Niño event is a different story. We'll have to wait and see how it unfolds.
