In August, Tulum's two free beaches, Playa Conchita and Playa del Pueblo, completed their first beach certification audit. The certification evaluates waste management, dune condition, vegetation, safety setup, lifeguard training, and medical readiness. David Buchanan García, who runs the Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre office, shared that both beaches received good initial comments but the final result will be known in October.

The absence of sargassum, a natural phenomenon, does not affect the certification score. The certification is crucial as it carries more weight than the paperwork does, as everything Tulum has certified so far sits inside Parque Nacional Tulum or up the coast at Akumal. For residents and visitors, this certification means closer access to free beaches and a safer, cleaner environment.

What's more, the presence of a Platino certificate can attract more tourists and businesses, potentially boosting the local economy. However, the process of obtaining the certification is long and requires continuous monitoring and improvement. It's worth noting that Tulum has seen an increase in sargassum presence this year, and the municipality has established a separate program to deal with this issue.

This certification process stands as a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and accessible beach environment for Tulum residents and visitors alike.
