...Before the Candles Are Lit... Janal Pixán in Tulum...
The Tulum Times presents 20 photographs by Miguel González showcasing the preparation and rituals of the Janal Pixán, a traditional Maya Day of the Dead celebration. The exhibition, titled 'Janal Pixán, tradición que no muere en Quintana Roo,' runs until February 28, 2027 at Museo Regional de la Costa Oriental (Mureco).

- The exhibition traces a day from sunrise to nightfall, with images capturing cornfield harvests, candle-making, food and drink preparation, and family altars being arranged.
- Visitors can follow the sequence of activities from the milpa to the cemetery visits, offering a glimpse into the traditions and knowledge passed down through generations.
- Mureco's altar display, featuring non-edible replicas of traditional offerings, emphasizes the importance of preserving local flora and fauna during the celebration.
With 104,151 visitors to the museum between September 2025 and August 2026, the exhibition has become a significant cultural event in Tulum, providing insight into the rich heritage and living traditions of the region.
