Getting excused from jury duty due to commute?

Getting excused from jury duty due to commute?
Legal & Financial 4 answers • andreas63andreas63
I was summoned to attend jury selection during winter time and the route to the courthouse is a 2 hour commute with three buses. By car it is likely around 30-40 minutes but I don’t have a driver’s license. I checked what the Uber fee would be like - around 45 dollars for one way. I’m really unsure what to do.

If you're being asked to travel an unreasonable distance, you can request an exemption. However, it's unclear what distance would be considered too far. You could argue that taking the bus for an extended period is impractical and that the cost of transportation is excessive, making it unreasonable to expect you to pay for it.

This is a legitimate reason for being excused. The court wants to accommodate people who can reliably attend without being unduly burdened.

Consider using the online portal to state your case, but you could also choose to explain your situation in person.

You can ask to be excused due to undue hardship and expense. The summons letter should have a phone number at the top that you can call to discuss your circumstances. Explain your situation, and they'll let you know if you can be excused and what you need to do next. You might also be able to make this request online.
