Horse-Playing Heralds Canadian Pride in Toronto's Latest Theatre Sensation
After years of dedicated rehearsal and innovative choreography, the Toronto Fringe Festival sensation 'Dancer (A Musical in Ten Furlongs)' is set to make its full-length debut at the Terminal Theatre. This unique musical, based on the true story of Northern Dancer, the first Canadian horse to win the Kentucky Derby in 1964, showcases the power of interdisciplinary collaboration and the enduring spirit of Canadian achievement.

The crux of the production lies in the dancers who embody the racehorses. Keanu Uchida, who plays Northern Dancer, has spent years honing his craft, studying equine movements and adopting the mindset of a thoroughbred. This non-traditional approach, where dancers physically portray the horses through contemporary dance, challenges audiences to suspend disbelief and immerse themselves in the narrative.
Choreographed by Stacey Tookey, known for her work on dance competitions, the show is a blend of athleticism and storytelling. 'Dancer' aims to inspire pride in Canadian accomplishments and highlight the nation's capabilities on a global stage. Betts hopes that viewers leave feeling empowered and more informed about Canada's rich sporting heritage.
