Living in Calgary, I've experienced my fair share of grocery bills, but the coming months might see an even bigger hit. Changing weather patterns linked to the super El Niño event could disrupt global food production, potentially pushing up prices for essential items like bread, rice, and produce.

Grocery Bills in Calgary Could Rise Due to El Niño

Bread, flour, and other wheat-based foods: Wheat prices have already increased by 48.4%, which could eventually lead to higher costs for everyday bread, pasta, and baked goods. While the exact increase is uncertain, it’s worth keeping an eye on prices.

Rice: Prices for rice have climbed 38.9% over the past year. As a staple in many diets, any increase could make grocery shopping more challenging, especially for those living in Northern Canada where prices are already high.

Fruits and vegetables: A weaker Canadian dollar could make imported produce more expensive, especially during winter months. Charlebois predicts that if the dollar falls, fruit prices could rise by 4%, and vegetable prices by 5.5%.
