Question 1

Is tipping expected in every country?

Accepted Answer

No, tipping customs vary enormously around the world. In the US and Canada, tipping 15-20% is expected in restaurants. In Japan and South Korea, tipping can be considered rude. In many European countries, a small tip of 5-10% is appreciated but not obligatory. Always research local customs before your trip to avoid awkward situations.

Question 2

How much should I tip in restaurants abroad?

Accepted Answer

Restaurant tipping varies by country: 15-20% in the US and Canada, 10-15% in Mexico and much of Latin America, 5-10% in most of Europe, and nothing in Japan, China, and South Korea. Many countries include a service charge in the bill, in which case additional tipping is optional but appreciated for exceptional service.

Question 3

Should I tip in cash or on a credit card?

Accepted Answer

Cash tips are generally preferred worldwide because they go directly to the service worker. In many developing countries, credit card tips may not reach the intended recipient or may be taxed differently. When tipping in cash abroad, use local currency rather than US dollars unless the local economy commonly accepts foreign currency.
