Question 1

What is Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)?

Accepted Answer

Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) adjusts salaries based on the relative cost of goods and services between countries. A $100,000 salary in New York has different purchasing power than in Playa del Carmen or Bangkok. PPP conversion shows what your salary is "worth" in terms of local buying power, helping you make informed relocation decisions.

Question 2

How should remote workers negotiate salary when moving abroad?

Accepted Answer

Remote workers typically negotiate using one of three models: origin-based pay (same salary regardless of location), location-adjusted pay (salary adjusted to local cost of living), or zone-based pay (salary bands by region). Many companies use a 10-30% cost-of-living adjustment. Use our PPP tool to understand the real purchasing power of offers.

Question 3

Does moving to a cheaper country mean I should accept a lower salary?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. If you provide the same value regardless of location, many argue for origin-based pay. However, some companies adjust salaries by location. The key is understanding your purchasing power, a 20% pay cut with 50% lower costs means you're financially better off. Our tool helps quantify this trade-off.

Question 4

How accurate is PPP for planning an expat budget?

Accepted Answer

PPP provides a useful baseline but has limitations. It reflects national averages, while expat lifestyles (imported goods, international schools, Western-style housing) may cost more than local averages suggest. Use PPP alongside our Cost of Living tool for destination-specific estimates based on actual expat spending patterns.
