Question 1

What is a passport power ranking?

Accepted Answer

Passport power rankings measure how many countries a passport holder can visit without a pre-arranged visa. The Henley Passport Index and Nomad Passport Index are the most cited rankings. As of 2024, top passports (Japan, Singapore, Germany) grant visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 190+ countries, while restricted passports may access fewer than 40.

Question 2

How do passport rankings affect digital nomads?

Accepted Answer

A stronger passport means more visa-free destinations and easier border crossings. Digital nomads with weaker passports may need to apply for visas weeks in advance, limiting spontaneous travel. Some nomads pursue second passports or residencies in countries like Panama, Portugal, or Paraguay to expand their travel options.

Question 3

Can I get a second passport as an expat?

Accepted Answer

Yes, many countries offer paths to citizenship for long-term residents. Popular options include: Panama (5 years residency), Mexico (5 years), Argentina (2 years), and several Caribbean nations offer citizenship by investment ($100,000-$250,000). Some countries like Italy and Ireland offer citizenship by descent if you have qualifying ancestry.

Question 4

How often do passport rankings change?

Accepted Answer

Rankings shift frequently as countries sign or revoke visa agreements. Major changes often follow diplomatic events, economic agreements, or security situations. For example, EU visa liberalization dramatically improved rankings for several Balkan countries. Check updated rankings regularly if visa-free access is important to your travel plans.
