Question 1

How long can I stay in Mexico as a tourist?

Accepted Answer

Mexico grants tourist visas (FMM) for up to 180 days. The actual duration is determined by the immigration officer at entry and stamped on your FMM form. It can be anywhere from 7 to 180 days. Always check your stamp. You can request 180 days politely, showing proof of accommodation and return travel.

Question 2

Does Mexico have a digital nomad visa?

Accepted Answer

Mexico does not have a specific digital nomad visa. Most remote workers use the 180-day tourist visa (FMM), which allows you to work remotely for non-Mexican employers. For stays longer than 180 days, you can apply for Temporary Residency, which is valid for 1-4 years and allows you to stay continuously.

Question 3

How do I get temporary residency in Mexico?

Accepted Answer

Apply at a Mexican consulate in your home country with: passport, proof of income (about $2,500+/month over the last 6 months, or about $42,000+ in savings held for 12 months, consulates set their own figures and update them each year), completed application form, and photos. Processing takes 2-4 weeks. After approval, you have 180 days to enter Mexico and exchange the visa for a residency card at INM.

Question 4

Can I work in Mexico on a tourist visa?

Accepted Answer

You cannot work for a Mexican employer on a tourist visa, but you can work remotely for foreign employers or clients. This is a common practice for digital nomads. If you want to work locally, start a business, or be employed by a Mexican company, you need a Temporary Residency visa with a work permit.

Question 5

What is the difference between temporary and permanent residency in Mexico?

Accepted Answer

Temporary Residency is valid for 1-4 years and requires proof of income or savings. Permanent Residency has no expiration and allows unrestricted work. You can apply for permanent residency after 4 years of temporary residency, through family ties to a Mexican national, or by meeting higher income/savings thresholds (about $4,200+/month or $168,000+ in savings). Both are applied for at a Mexican consulate abroad, not from inside Mexico.
