Question 1

Do I need pet insurance when moving abroad?

Accepted Answer

Pet insurance is highly recommended when living abroad, as veterinary costs can be unexpectedly high and your home country pet insurance likely will not cover treatment in another country. Some expat destinations have excellent but expensive veterinary care, and emergency procedures can cost thousands of dollars without insurance.

Question 2

How much does pet insurance cost abroad?

Accepted Answer

Pet insurance premiums abroad typically range from $20-$80/month for dogs and $15-$50/month for cats, depending on the country, breed, age, and coverage level. Plans in Western Europe and Australia tend to be more expensive, while Southeast Asia and Latin America offer more affordable options with similar coverage levels.

Question 3

Does pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions abroad?

Accepted Answer

Most pet insurance policies do not cover pre-existing conditions, regardless of country. If your pet has a diagnosed condition, get insurance before any new diagnosis appears on their records. Some international pet insurers offer waiting periods after which certain conditions may be covered, but this varies significantly by provider.
