Question 1

Can expats open a bank account abroad?

Accepted Answer

Yes, most countries allow expats to open bank accounts, though requirements vary. Common requirements include a valid passport, proof of local address, a visa or residency permit, and sometimes a tax identification number. Some countries require you to visit a branch in person, while others offer online account opening.

Question 2

What is the best way to transfer money internationally?

Accepted Answer

Traditional bank wire transfers are secure but expensive, with fees of $25-$50 plus unfavorable exchange rates. Services like Wise (formerly TransferWise), OFX, and Remitly offer much better rates and lower fees. For regular transfers, setting up recurring payments through these services can save hundreds of dollars annually.

Question 3

Should I keep my home country bank account when moving abroad?

Accepted Answer

Yes, maintaining at least one bank account in your home country is strongly recommended. You may need it for receiving pension payments, managing investments, paying taxes, or handling obligations back home. Some US banks close accounts of non-residents, so inform your bank about your move and consider banks with expat-friendly policies.
