Question 1

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive abroad?

Accepted Answer

Many countries require an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home country license. An IDP is a translation of your license and is required in countries that are not party to certain driving conventions. In the US, you can obtain one through AAA for about $20 before your trip.

Question 2

Can I use my US driver license in another country?

Accepted Answer

Some countries accept a valid US license for short-term stays (usually 30-90 days), while others require an IDP from day one. For long-term residents, most countries require you to convert to a local license within 3-12 months. Some countries have reciprocal agreements allowing direct license exchange without retesting.

Question 3

What side of the road do they drive on in other countries?

Accepted Answer

About 75% of countries drive on the right side of the road, while about 25% drive on the left (including the UK, Japan, Australia, India, and Thailand). Adjusting to driving on the opposite side takes practice, especially at roundabouts and intersections. Rent an automatic transmission car initially to reduce complexity.
