Tampa Welcomes a New Pro Women’s Basketball Team in 2027

The city of Tampa is set to join the ranks of pro basketball teams with the upcoming launch of the UpShot League in 2027. This exciting addition to the local sports scene is a step towards greater visibility and support for women's basketball.

The UpShot League, launched in 2026, is already making waves in the Southeast with its expansion into Tampa. The new team will play at the Yuengling Center, offering locals a chance to support and cheer for their own women's basketball stars. As an expat or digital nomad, this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved and contribute to the community by helping name the team. Who would you vote for, a Grouper or a Tarpon?

While the league remains secondary to the WNBA, it's clear that women's sports are gaining traction and popularity. This new team not only provides a pathway for talented college players to showcase their skills but also fills a void in the local sports landscape. With the success of other expansion franchises like the Tampa Bay Sun FC and Rays, it's exciting to see how this new league will contribute to Tampa's thriving sports culture.
