El también llamado Castillo Negro, construido a mediados del siglo XVII, fue producto del estudio de la defensa del puerto que realizó el ingeniero Leonardo Torriani en 1587, donde planteó que el Castillo de San Cristóbal debía estar protegido por dos torres defensivas, de manera que su fuego cruzado cubriera la costa e impidiera el desembarco de posibles atacantes.
