San Miguel de Allende's Grocery Owner Warns of Rule Changes Affecting Small Businesses
As a small business owner in San Miguel de Allende since 2021, I've seen firsthand how even minor rule changes can impact my operations. The latest news from nearby Celaya is just another reminder of the challenges we face.
Earlier this month, Celaya officials announced that they would be opening their doors to the FILCEL 2026 cultural festival, which will feature over 300 free activities. While this is exciting news for the region, it comes with a potential downside for small businesses like mine. The festival is expected to attract a significant number of visitors, and with that comes the risk of increased utility costs and potential service disruptions.
Small operators like myself are particularly vulnerable to these changes. Power cuts and internet outages can be catastrophic for a grocery store, especially during peak hours. I've already seen firsthand how a rule change can cost a small operator. Back in 2022, a sudden change in local regulations forced me to shut down for a day, leading to lost sales and a hit to my reputation. This time, I'm bracing for the worst, hoping for the best.
