Voladores de Papantla Set to Return to Tulum: A Cultural Revival
After a three-decade hiatus, the Voladores de Papantla, a sacred ritual of the Totonac people, will return to Tulum. This news comes as a significant cultural boost to the area, which has been struggling with declining visitor numbers. The ceremony, a ritual that involves four performers hanging from a tall pole while a fifth plays music, will resume once the Mexican Culture Ministry inspects the ceremonial pole to ensure it is in good condition.

The undersecretary of culture, Marina Núñez Bespalova, emphasized the importance of this ritual for Tulum's cultural landscape. 'Within our scope, we are helping to improve conditions in Tulum so that people can once again enjoy these spaces,' she stated. This return is part of the federal government's efforts to revitalize the destination and attract more tourists.
During their last performance in March, the voladores left Tulum due to a lack of spectators, a decision that affected their income significantly. The ceremony, recognized globally for its cultural significance, will resume with the support of the local community and government, offering a cultural experience for visitors once again.
