Tulum Beachfront Returns to Its Radiant Self This Week
David Buchanan García, head of the Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre office in Tulum, announced that sargassum landings have significantly decreased over the past few days. Zofemat, the municipal beach office, collected 7,300 tons of sargassum as of Saturday, October 17, and moved it in 2,024 container trips. This marks a notable improvement as Tulum transitions from its heaviest collection year to the winter season, when visitors often judge beaches based on their aesthetic appeal.

With the sargassum landings decreasing, the municipality's beach office expects the coastline to be practically clean by the end of the week. This follows an August federal reclassification of sargassum from waste to resource, allowing for private use of the material. While the statewide collection stands at 138,000 tons, with projections above 150,000 tons by year-end, Tulum's efforts have put the beachfront back on its radiant postcard image.
The beach office's efforts have not only beautified the shoreline but also provided insight into how to expect changes in beach conditions, even as small accumulations remain at the shoreline. Visitors to Tulum can expect a clearer view of the beach, which Buchanan noted as crucial to how visitors read the beauty of the coast.
