Sargassum Waste Management in Tulum: A Daily Struggle
As a yoga teacher in Tulum, I've noticed firsthand the daily struggle with sargassum waste management on our beautiful beaches. According to the latest report from The Tulum Times, roughly seven container loads of sargassum leave Tulum's beaches every day, including weekends and holidays. This ongoing issue has been a constant presence since January, with more than 6,500 tons of sargassum removed from four public beaches by municipal crews.

The numbers are staggering: over 1,800 container trips have been made to dispose of this seaweed, with more than half of the 2026 collection coming after mid-July. This means that the heavy weeks didn't start at the beginning of the season, as many might think. The uneven rhythm of sargassum arrival makes it challenging for the crews to plan their operations, as the director of the Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre office, David Buchanan, noted, 'We have had calm weeks, others not so much.'
For those living and visiting Tulum, this ongoing issue is a reminder of the environmental challenges we face. While the municipality handles the public beaches, hotels are responsible for their own frontage. The costs can be significant, with some hotels potentially spending up to three times as much to remove sargassum as they do for electricity. This not only affects the bottom line but also impacts the daily operations and planning for the tourism industry.
