I had the same experience as many expats and digital nomads: a two-week surf trip to Tamarindo that turned into a permanent residency. Having been here for over a year, I've seen the town grow and change, much like the recent news regarding debt relief for independent workers.

The deadline for workers to apply for debt condonation with the CCSS is rapidly approaching. According to Borrón y Cuenta Nueva, independent workers with outstanding debts to the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) have until November 11, 2026, to file for condonation.

Joseph Thompson, a representative of Borrón y Cuenta Nueva, emphasized the urgency: 'This is the moment to act. We cannot miss this opportunity, which was hard-fought for years. We need to encourage everyone with outstanding debts to visit the CCSS, consult their individual situation, and process the application before the deadline.'

For those unfamiliar, the debt relief initiative is based on Law No. 10.232, which has seen several reforms, including Laws No. 10.432 and 10.604, extending the application period and including medical bills under eligible debts. This means that multitudes, recargos, and interests associated with CCSS obligations can be waived, subject to specific conditions.

Specifically, the law allows for the condonation of medical bill payments, provided certain criteria are met. These include being an assured individual, having the requisite period of service, and adhering to the formal application process.

Given the unique challenges of living in Tamarindo, it's crucial for everyone in the area to check their financial standing with the CCSS. Whether you're a long-term resident or a short-term visitor, this could significantly impact your financial health. Don't let this opportunity slip away; consult your situation and apply now if you qualify.
