Best hikes reachable by public transport for fall foliage?

I'm looking for recommendations for the best hikes in upstate NY that I could reach from NYC without a car. Ideally, there's a cute town nearby that I could stay at for a couple of nights while I do the surrounding hikes. I've got moderate hiking experience and comfortable with a bit of light scrambling.

Breakneck Ridge is a popular hike with a trailhead located near the Metro North station, but be prepared for crowds on weekends. The scenic trail offers stunning views and challenging terrain.

Unfortunately, the trail is currently closed until 2027.

Be cautious when attempting to hike from Peekskill to Anthony's Nose on foot, as the roads are busy highways and cell service is limited. I learned this the hard way after relying on outdated information from a website a couple of years ago.

The Metro North station is situated near the Appalachian Trail, and a short walk west from the station reveals some beautiful overlooks that are perfect for leaf peeping in the fall.

To the northeast of the trailhead, you'll find some rolling hills that offer a scenic alternative to the main trail.

If you're planning a trip to the northern spots, consider visiting the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, which offers a tracker on their website to help plan your trip. The gardens are an easy commute, and you can also explore the nearby Arthur Avenue for a delicious lunch.
