How has Panama's public transportation changed?

I'm a Panamanian lawyer who helps expats with residency visas and real estate. I'm interested in knowing the changes in Panama's public transportation system over the past 20 years, specifically what improvements have been made since the 2006 bus explosion that killed 18 people, and if those changes have made a significant impact on transportation in the city.

It's frustrating to see that after 20 years, the only change in Panama City is the introduction of metro buses, while in other areas, such as Colón, the old red devil buses are still in use. Meanwhile, in the rest of the country, people are stuck with old, non-air-conditioned chivas. This subsidized system is supposed to benefit all Panamanians, but it only seems to work in the city. In fact, a bus traveling from Colón to Cuipo crashed this year, resulting in two fatalities. Over the years, there have been numerous accidents, and the system has become stagnant in the city.

You're absolutely right that other provinces haven't seen significant changes. However, in some areas, people have to wait for up to four hours for a bus, such as in Costa Arriba and Costa Abajo. In addition, certain neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city are plagued by internal buses that can take up to an hour of your time due to the inefficiencies of cooperatives that are more concerned with maintaining their power than improving the service.

I agree with you completely, having experienced the challenges of public transportation in the interior.

I recall meeting the person responsible for maintaining the buses, who claimed to be a refrigeration technician. He told me that he used the same gas for all the buses because it was cheap, but he admitted that he hadn't performed regular maintenance on the bus that was involved in the accident. He eventually fled the country before the authorities could hold him accountable, only to return 10 years later and start working as a mechanic.
