Is a call from ComEd about a refund and Green Light Energy a scam?

I got a call from someone claiming to be from ComEd, saying I was getting a $150 refund for overpayment and they asked me to confirm my address. They then said they were going to enroll me in a lowered payment program with Green Light Energy, but I'm not sure if this is a scam. I looked up Green Light Energy and they have low ratings for abusive customer service.

It's worth asking whether a public utility company has the financial resources to hire people to contact customers and claim they owe money. If they've always contacted you through mail or email, it's unlikely that would change.

I was approached by a canvasser in a Jewel parking lot and offered a free Bluetooth speaker if I signed up. I politely told him it was an unusual tactic for a legitimate business, and he just rolled his eyes.

When confronted, I tell them it's a scam. I've also dealt with canvassers who try to get you to switch providers by knocking on doors in your building. I once asked one of them who let him in and told him to leave immediately, which he did.

This is a common scam where companies become your electricity provider and raise your rates, making it difficult to cancel. Typically, these scammers go door-to-door in apartment buildings.

A red flag for these scams is how quickly a manager is available to talk. If it's almost instant, it's likely part of the scam.
