I started working for a new company where I get 25 cents a mile - seems like I’m losing money with how high gas is right now.

You should be getting the federal rate for mileage or complain. The federal rate is 0.58 cents per mile, but I've heard that some companies pay more. Check your contract to see what it says.

The federal minimum is more than twice that, I think. I've heard it's around $0.76 per mile.

In Illinois, the federal minimum rate for mileage reimbursement is not enforced, so employers can pay whatever they want. This is the case unless the employee is doing work that's exempt, such as military, medical, or charitable work. As a result, some employers might pay as little as possible, which could be a significant amount less than the federal minimum of 0.76 per mile.

It's puzzling that anyone would agree to drive a personal vehicle without receiving reimbursement at the federal minimum rate. Employees shouldn't have to deal with paperwork to prove wear and tear, maintenance, and other expenses. Instead, they should be told that it's the law and that they're entitled to reimbursement.

The issue is that the federal minimum rate is not a requirement in this area. While I agree that employers should pay the minimum, not everyone has the ability to push back against abuse. This can lead to some employees being taken advantage of.

My company reimburses me at 58 cents per mile, which barely covers expenses with gas prices around $4.50. This rate is lower than the federal minimum, and some employers might pay even less. Some companies offer a flat monthly stipend instead of mileage reimbursement, but this can be less beneficial for drivers who rack up a lot of miles. Additionally, employees might be able to deduct unreimbursed mileage on their taxes, but the rules for W-2 employees are unclear.
