Why do trick-or-treaters skip older houses in Calgary?

I've noticed that kids tend to go past my old house in an older neighborhood to hit up the new infills next door. My porch light is on, but I don't have any decorations up. What gives?

We had to go sit outside on the porch because the kids didn't want to climb the stairs. Our house has a lot of steps leading up to it.

When my six year olds trick-or-treat, they usually prefer houses that are decorated. However, if we're on a street with older residents who don't decorate but give out a lot of candy, they might visit those houses too.

In my social circle, a house without decorations is often seen as a sign that the residents don't want visitors. Putting out even a small decoration like a plastic pumpkin can help attract trick-or-treaters.
