Calgary Fire Officials Stress Home Safety During School Drills
With Calgary schools back in session, the city's fire officials are reminding residents of the importance of home safety. During a recent media availability at St. Elizabeth Seton School in the northwest of the city, Chief Steve Dongworth and junior fire chief Kean Hallisey highlighted the crucial steps every household should take to prepare for a fire emergency.

According to Dongworth, each school must conduct at least six fire drills annually, with fire department staff present to ensure all evacuation procedures are followed. These drills help familiarize students and staff with the necessary steps to quickly and efficiently exit the building. Kean Hallisey, a Grade 8 student and aspiring firefighter, emphasized the importance of an escape plan with two exit options per room and a predetermined meeting location.
“Every home should have a plan with two exits and a meeting spot. Practice it twice a year to stay safe in an emergency,” Hallisey said.
For those looking to enhance their home safety, the City of Calgary provides detailed guidance on creating an escape plan. Visit their website for more information: https://www.calgary.ca/emergencies/preparedness/home-escape-plan.html.
