I'll be traveling to Puerto Vallarta next month for my birthday and want to stay in a few different areas. I've traveled around Mexico, but not this part. I'm looking for neighborhoods with ocean swimming, walkable areas for food and coffee, and affordable accommodations.

With eight nights to spend, you can divide your time between several locations. Puerto Vallarta and Yelapa are ideal for ocean swimming. If you prefer hiking, I recommend a two-hour hike along the ocean that offers breathtaking views. You can combine this with a horseback ride to a nearby waterfall and enjoy a delicious meal on the beach. Alternatively, take the bus from Puerto Vallarta to Boca de Tomatlan and hike to Colomitos, Las Animas, or Quimixto.

A 10-minute taxi ride from downtown Puerto Vallarta will take you to Mismaloya, where you can swim in the bay and visit the nearby Eden park. The area offers plenty of hiking opportunities and activities without feeling isolated.

I wouldn't suggest staying in Yelapa, as it's better suited for a day trip. Sayulita's beach is also quite dirty, but it might appeal to those with a more laid-back, hippie vibe.

I think you'll find everything you're looking for in a certain area. There are plenty of small, beachside restaurants serving great food.
