Bahía de Banderas Takes the Lead in the World Surf Cities Network
Bahía de Banderas, the coastal region that includes Sayulita, Bucerías, and San Pancho, now leads the World Surf Cities Network for the 2026-2027 term. This news comes as Sayulita prepares to host its Day of the Dead surf contest, which runs from October 29 to November 1, 2026. The region's rise to the top of this network is a reflection of the area's strong surfing culture and economic impact.

Since its admission to the network in November 2025, Bahía de Banderas has quickly become a key player, securing the vice presidency in June 2026. The network consists of 18 cities worldwide, where surfing is part of the local identity and economy. Sayulita, with its world-renowned waves, is now more prominent on the global surfing map thanks to this leadership role.
The festival itself, the Festival Internacional Día de Muertos Bahía de Banderas, will feature altars, catrina contests, parades, music, and food across multiple venues, including Sayulita, Bucerías, San Pancho, San Juan de Abajo, and Valle de Banderas. The surf contest, a highlight of the festival, will run from October 29 to November 1, with a prize pool of 478,000 pesos, including 80,000 pesos for the winner of the men’s open shortboard division and 5,000 pesos for the top dog team.
