Playas de Puerto Morelos Face Erosion Crisis: What You Need to Know
The erosion of Playas de Quintana Roo is an ongoing issue, with some areas losing up to 14 meters of sand annually. Óscar Rébora Aguilera, the head of the Secretaría de Ecología y Medio Ambiente (SEMA), warns that this affects not just the beauty of the beaches but also the local ecosystems and economy. In response, the SEMA is implementing a comprehensive plan to restore 33.5 kilometers of coastline in four municipalities, including Puerto Morelos.

The plan includes the restoration of dune systems and the recovery of native vegetation, crucial for protecting the coastline. However, the implementation of these projects is still in the initial stages, with the SEMA working on obtaining the necessary permits and funding.
For expats and digital nomads in Puerto Morelos, this means keeping an eye on how the local beaches and infrastructure are impacted. While the restoration efforts are underway, the situation remains fluid, so stay informed and be prepared for changes in beach access or local policies that could affect your daily routine.
