Hoteliers Seek Bank Credits to Restore 33 Kilometers of Eroded Playas
Hoteliers in Puerto Morelos and neighboring towns are taking a significant step to restore 33 kilometers of coastline, a vital ecosystem for both the local economy and the environment. According to Óscar Rébora Aguilera, the titular of the Secretaría de Ecología y Medio Ambiente (SEMA), the project aims to address the erosion issue, which has caused a 14-meter retreat in some areas per year.

The initiative covers four municipalities: Cancún, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel. Puerto Morelos, in particular, requires a comprehensive project executive plan due to its unique environmental characteristics and existing environmental impact authorization. The city faces specific challenges that need to be addressed carefully.
To fund the ambitious project, hoteliers are exploring bank credits. However, several conditions must be met, especially for Puerto Morelos, before the project can move forward. The approval process is a critical step, and while the Manifestación de Impacto Ambiental (MIA) has been authorized by Semarnat, further developments are still needed.
