We moved here with our two dogs and our cat, so I completely understand the anxiety around this. As a mom, they're part of the family and there was no way we were leaving them behind. The good news is the process is very doable and Playa is wonderfully pet-friendly.
For getting your dog into Mexico, you'll need a health certificate from your vet issued within 10 days of travel. It has to show rabies vaccination given at least 15 days before travel but not more than 12 months prior. If you're coming from the US or Canada, your vet's health cert needs to be endorsed by USDA APHIS or CFIA, and this takes 2-5 business days, so please don't leave it to the last minute. I learned that one the hard way.
When you land, you present the endorsed certificate at the SENASICA office in the airport. They issue an import permit right there, it's free for 1-2 pets.
At 30 lbs, your dog will likely need to fly as checked baggage or cargo since most airlines limit cabin pets to under 17 lbs in a carrier. Alaska Airlines, United, and American all fly to Cancún and accept pets in cargo, typically $200-400 USD per flight. If you're flexible on airline, Volaris and VivaAerobus take pets in cabin but only under 10 kg.
Once you're here, Playa is great for pets. Dogs are everywhere. People bring them to restaurants, shops, the beach. There's a popular dog beach near Playacar Phase 1 and several informal dog parks. For vets, Dr. Pet and Veterinaria del Mar are both excellent and affordable. Dog walkers charge $100-200 MXN per walk, and there are pet stores everywhere: +Kota, Petco, and smaller local shops.
Things I wish someone had told me: always confirm your rental allows pets BEFORE signing, some landlords say no. The heat here is intense, so walks should be early morning or evening, avoiding 11 AM-4 PM. And ticks are a big issue. Get Bravecto or NexGard from any vet, $400-800 MXN per dose, lasts 3 months. We check our dogs after every single walk. Also, your dog will encounter street dogs. Keep vaccinations current and be cautious at parks.
Your pup will love it here. Ours are happier than they've ever been.
