New Businesses in Playa del Carmen: Who Gains and Who Pays?
Playa del Carmen is buzzing with 30 new businesses opening their doors in August, despite the ongoing economic challenges. But as a local bike rental owner, I can’t help but wonder: who’s really benefiting from this growth?
The news is exciting for the local economy, but it also means increased competition and potentially higher operating costs for small businesses like mine. The question is, who’s driving these new openings, and what does it mean for the residents and small operators in the area?
Who's Driving the Growth?- The statement from the local authorities mentions that the new businesses are a mix of various types, including restaurants, shops, and services.
- However, the real winners might be larger companies or investors with the resources to weather the economic storm and capitalize on the growing tourism market.
For small operators like me, the cost of doing business just went up. Rent, permits, and taxes are becoming more burdensome as the competition intensifies. This isn’t just about the initial setup costs but the ongoing expenses that can squeeze margins.
For instance, the new bike rental companies entering the market will likely offer lower rates to attract customers, forcing us to either reduce our prices or find ways to cut costs. Either way, it’s a tough balancing act that impacts our bottom line.
Owns a bike rental in Playa del Carmen since 2022. Knows what a rule change costs a small operator.
