Basic Food Basket Costs More in Mini-Supermarkets, Says Acodeco
The latest report from the Consumer Protection and Competition Authority (Acodeco) shows that the cost of the Basic Food Basket is higher in mini-supermarkets compared to supermarkets. In September 2026, the estimated cost was $306.03 in supermarkets and $360.79 in mini-supermarkets and grocery stores, a difference of $54.76. Compared to the first half of September, the amount increased by $1.35 in supermarkets and $5.58 in the smaller stores.

As a retiree living in Panama City, I can attest to the importance of keeping an eye on these fluctuations. The price differences can impact the monthly budget, especially for those who shop in mini-supermarkets due to their proximity and convenience.
According to Acodeco, the prices of frequently consumed items like beef, chicken, rice, eggs, and vegetables vary depending on the establishment. It's essential to compare prices, check quantities, and verify offers before making a purchase. This advice is particularly useful for expats and digital nomads who might be relying more on local stores.
Brazilian retiree, 5 years in Panama City. Interested in healthcare, residency and quiet streets.
