First time coop buyer in South Brooklyn, single woman?

I'm in the process of buying a coop in South Brooklyn as a single woman. I'm 32 and hoping to start a family in the future so I wanted to plant some roots and start to feel stable. I make around $120k annually and have $60k saved. I plan to apply for the Home First grant to get some down payment assistance. The place I found is a 2-bedroom across the street from a nice nature spot, but it's far from the train.

I feel fortunate about my purchase. I managed to get a good price during the Covid market downturn, and the building's financial stability has kept maintenance costs relatively low. This has given me a sense of security, as I'm insulated from the uncertainty of rent increases. Although my place is small and not intended to be our forever home, my partner has moved in with me, and we plan to sell it if we have children in the future. One thing to consider when buying a home far from public transportation is the potential impact on your social life.

How far from a train station are you thinking? I bought my cooperative apartment in South Brooklyn about 20 years ago. It was a great decision for me, as it provided the stability I needed. My apartment is about 10 blocks away from the station, which includes a steep hill that helps keep me in shape. The station is a major hub with multiple train lines, so the distance is outweighed by the convenience. I commute to lower Manhattan for work, and you should consider the fact that your job may not be in midtown forever.

I'm in my late 30s and bought a two-bedroom apartment four months ago. I worked with Loan Depot to secure a competitive interest rate, which helped make the purchase more affordable. My realtor was also very helpful. I chose not to seek down payment assistance and instead opted for a lower interest rate. It's essential to carefully review the terms and conditions of your loan and consider hiring a home inspector to identify potential issues before making a purchase. I received a $4,000 credit as a result of the inspection, and I also spoke with current residents in the building to gauge its suitability for me.

I'm considering backing out of a purchase due to some concerns. The seller has acknowledged issues with leaks in the building, but they haven't addressed the problem. Instead, they've simply painted over the affected areas, which I find unacceptable. I'm worried about the potential costs and hassle of dealing with these issues.

I completely agree with you. Dealing with the stress and uncertainty of buying a home can be overwhelming. I've been through the process recently, and I have some valuable insights to share. If you're considering purchasing a home, I recommend taking the time to carefully research and prepare for the process.

As a single female entrepreneur, I've had to navigate the challenges of the real estate market. I was your age when I went through the process, but I ultimately decided not to purchase a property. Looking back, I think I made the right decision, especially given the impact of the Covid pandemic on the market. If you're confident in your job's stability and potential for growth, then buying a home might be a good option for you. However, I've found that renting can be a more attractive choice, especially when you have a business that can be more flexible and adaptable to changing market conditions.
