Water Contamination Fears Spark Aquifer Testing in Tulum’s La Veleta
In recent months, residents of Tulum's La Veleta neighborhood have expressed concerns about water quality, leading a local environmental group to request that authorities test the aquifer. Karla Acevedo Polo, a representative of Tulum Sostenible, has been receiving reports from neighbors about cloudy, foul-smelling water, often shared through videos. These reports have prompted the group to call for comprehensive testing across the aquifer, emphasizing the importance of a diagnosis to address potential public health and ecological risks.

The Yucatán Peninsula's unique geological structure means that any contamination in one area could affect the entire region's water supply. Tulum Sostenible is advocating for samples to be taken in La Veleta and surrounding areas to identify the source of the issue. The group highlights that limited sewer coverage in the area could contribute to these water quality concerns.
While earlier tests of cenotes revealed high levels of E. coli, the focus now is on the groundwater, which is currently underrepresented in local monitoring programs. Testing the aquifer will provide critical information needed to develop effective solutions to maintain the health of both the residents and the environment.
